On Friday last week Harrington BBC, Street Sleeper and Pure Good collaborated to clean up the streets of Cape Town for Mandela Day.
Despite the cool weather over 40 volunteers arrived in high spirits ready to do their 67 minutes. On arrival we were treated to delicious coffee at Pure Good made by Shannon Smuts – A Masterchef South Africa contestant. Oli from Street Sleeper explained the up-cycled survival bags to us and said that we were to donate 20 bags to homeless people that morning.
Andrew from HBBC – the Harrington Buy Back Centre -explained that their aim is to buy recyclable materials from homeless persons in the city as well as act as a drop off area for homes & businesses in the City.
After the introduction we set off with bags in hand to make our mark for Madiba. At the end of the day we had managed to fill over 20 bags of recyclables, handed out 20 Street Sleeper bags and cleaned up the litter in a part of the east city.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers involved and to the organizers – HBBC, Street Sleeper & Pure Good, and to Tuffy for sponsoring all the recycling bags!
